Discovery of X-rays
It was in 1895 that Roentgen made the x-ray discovery while carrying out a physics experiment. He noticed that the tube produced such rays that could pass through objects such as cardboard. When he made an attempt to stop these rays by placing his hand between the screen and tube, he noticed that it formed an image of his hand bones. His discovery bestowed him with the Nobel Prize in 1901.
These rays had no name, and thus, were showed with an X symbol which meant unknown. The X-rays are very much akin to the rays produced by the sun that allow us to visualize things and blaze or heat the things where they fall. It is due to the high energy level of x-rays that they are able to pass through your muscles and skin. Denser tissues like bones absorb the same to appear white on the film, while lighter tissues appear dark.

Industrial Purpose
X-rays have the potential to fetch structural data of any material they pass through. Thus, these are helpful in determining any structural discrepancies in metallic objects. When it comes to building materials, say for aircraft, x-rays can reveal any stress-related transformations.
Medical Purpose
The medicine sector has seen use of x-rays on a wider ground. X-rays help reveal bone or any other tissue structure and even detect if there is any kind of abnormality in your tumor or fracture. A vital role is played by x-rays in dental imaging as well.
In some cases, contrast agents may be needed to be injected so that relevant information about a specific body part could be acquired. The contrast agent is purposed at increasing the specific organ's visualization. Since, this helps identify any abnormality that could have been missed out by the ordinary x-ray.
What do X-rays detect?

- A third type is abdominal x-ray that lets the doctor identify Ileus i.e. diagnosis of intestine obstruction, Ascites i.e. collection of fluid in abdominal cavity, stone in gallbladder or urinary system, and presence of air in some abdominal organ.
